Toda unha rareza para os fans de Jimi Hendrix. Este video foi gravado en 1967 para un filme promocional no cal podemos ver a Hendrix no estudio, acompañado pola sua Experience, tocando o piano e o violín ao son dos temas ‘Burning Of The Midnight Lamp’ e ‘The Wind Cries Mary’.

‘MONTEREY POP’, documental online.

Monterey Pop is a 1968 concert film by D. A. Pennebaker that documents the Monterey Pop Festival of 1967. Among Pennebaker’s several camera operators were fellow documentarians Richard Leacock and Albert Maysles. The painter Brice Marden has an «assistant camera» credit, and Bob Neuwirth, who figured prominently in Pennebaker’s Bob Dylan documentary Dont Look Back, acted as stage manager. Titles for the film were by the illustrator Tomi Ungerer. Featured performers include Big Brother and the Holding Company with Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, Hugh Masekela, Otis Redding, Ravi Shankar, The Mamas & the Papas, The Who (who destroy their instruments at the end of «My Generation»), and the Jimi Hendrix Experience, whose name-sake set his guitar on fire during «Wild Thing».

‘Jimi Plays Monterey’ é un documental do aclamado director D. A. Pennebaker publicado en 1986 sobre a clásica aparición de Jimi Hendrix no Monterey Pop Festival o 18 de xuño de 1967.

Jimi Plays Monterey is a posthumous live album by Jimi Hendrix released in February 1986. The album documents The Jimi Hendrix Experience’s performance at the Monterey Pop Festival on June 18, 1967. As well as songs from the band’s debut album Are You Experienced, Monterey also includes covers of «Killing Floor» (Howlin’ Wolf), «Like a Rolling Stone» (Bob Dylan), «Rock Me Baby» (B. B. King) and «Wild Thing» (Chip Taylor). The version of «Wild Thing» on the album is one of the most notable live performances ever, as, in an iconic moment in rock history, he sets his guitar alight after the song and lets it burn.

Jimi Plays Monterey is also a short film directed by D. A. Pennebaker documenting the same performance as the album, also released in 1986. It is notable for containing several interviews with rock stars, and containing an art piece by Denny Dent during the performance of «Can You See Me».

‘Woodstock: The Director’s Cut’, documental online.

Woodstock is a 1970 documentary on the Woodstock Festival that took place in August 1969 at Bethel in New York. The film was directed by Michael Wadleigh and was edited by (amongst others) Martin Scorsese and Thelma Schoonmaker; Schoonmaker was nominated for an Academy Award for Film Editing. It received the Academy Award for Documentary Feature, as well as a nomination for Best Sound. The film was also screened at the 1970 Cannes Film Festival, but wasn’t entered into the main competition. The Official Director’s Cut, spanning 225 minutes, was released in 1994. There is also a solo DVD release of Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock. VH1 Classic occasionally airs the Director’s Cut version of the documentary. In 1996, Woodstock was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being «culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant».

Hai cousas imprescindibles…

El festival de Woodstock de 1969 fue seguramente uno de los eventos más representativos por el ingenio colectivo acarreado a la música de los años 60 y al movimiento flower power. En éste contexto, la actuación de Jimi Hendrix se convirtió en un verdadero y propio símbolo del festival, además del pensamiento pacifista de aquellos años. La exhibición del guitarrista estaba programada para el cierre del evento, la noche del 18 de agosto de 1969, tercero y último de aquellos «tres días de paz, amor y música». A causa de problemas técnicos y logísticos que se verificaron, por no contar con la violenta lluvia que se abatió sobre la zona en mitad del segundo día (durante la actuación de los pioneros en improvisar en el rock, Grateful Dead), su performance debió ser reprogramada para la mañana siguiente. La inmensa cantidad de fans de los tres días anteriores (más de 500.000 espectadores pagantes) se había reducido considerablemente y Hendrix terminó cerrando el recital delante de una audiencia (respetable pero decididamente inferior a las expectativas) de aproximadamente 180.000 espectadores, exhaustos y en muchos casos incluso distraídos y desganados.

El guitarrista se presentó sobre el palco con una formación inédita, introducida por el speaker como Jimi Hendrix Experience, pero rápidamente vuelta a presentar por el mismo Hendrix como Gipsy Sun and Rainbows: prosiguió una exhibición de dos horas (en absoluto entre las más largas de su carrera). El hecho que más sobresalió en aquella histórica exhibición, fue la celebérrima transfiguración guitarristica operada sobre el tema The Star-Spangled Banner, himno de los Estados Unidos; Hendrix interpretó el tema en una manera salvaje mezclándolo con feroces simulaciones sonoras de bombardeos y ametrallamientos sobre los barrios de Vietnam, sirenas anti-aéreas y otros ruidos de batalla, el todo utilizando nada más que su guitarra.

La realidad de los hechos, queda aún en una extrema controversia sobre el significado que Hendrix quiso dar a aquel modo de proponer el himno nacional estadounidense. Si bien su razón sea más bien clara, hay que decir que desde hacia un año aquella versión de The Star-Spangled Banner era propuesta en vivo y el mismo Hendrix se mostró siempre misterioso sobre el tema: en una entrevista sobre el festival de Woodstock el guitarrista se declaró desinteresado a las cuestiones políticas, y a una pregunta más precisa – hecha durante el Dick Cavett’s Show – sobre el por qué de su versión tan poco ortodoxa del himno norteamericano Jimi respondió muy tranquilamente «encuentro maravilloso tocarlo así».

Algunas teorías de que Hendrix fuese de hecho favorable a la intervención bélica en Vietnam quedan totalmente de lado no solo al tomar en cuenta la transfiguración del himno efectuado en Woodstock, sino más bien al escuchar el tema Machine Gun, contenido en su último LP Band Of Gypsys, una explícita canción de protesta en contra de la guerra.
